Personal History:

Dr. Blackwelder comes to the CVD after a distinguished career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and five years as a biostatistical consultant. At the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), he led a Biometry unit in the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) and had overall responsibility for statistical consulting with scientists within DMID, clinical investigators within NIAID and investigators outside NIH. He consulted and collaborated on numerous clinical trials and observational studies, especially randomized vaccine trials. In particular, he played a critical role in the development of acellular pertussis vaccines. Currently, he provides statistical leadership for CVD projects and lectures on statistics for the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine’s course in vaccinology. He consults with clinical and laboratory investigators on design and analysis of CVD research studies. His biostatistical research interest is in methods for design and analysis in clinical trials.
