Research Interests

Neurogenetics and genomics: Endophenotype-based candidate gene association studies in schizophrenia. Gene expression studies in post-mortem cortical tissue, and in animal models of neuropsychiatric diseases. Pharmacogenomics.

Medication-induced motor disorders: Identification, prevention, and management of antipsychotic-induced motor disorders, consultation and application of novel treatment strategies.

Combined genetic and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging studies: Current interests in sequence variations that affect dopamine-related candidate receptor gene association with endophenotypes in clinical samples, expression in post-mortem cortical tissue, and receptor density in clinical samples using receptor-specific radioligand.

Pharmacological probe studies and experimental therapeutics: Using novel compounds to treat neurocognitive deficits related to poor functional outcome in schizophrenia. Current interests in improving social and emotional cognition in schizophrenia by modulation of oxytocin receptors, and treatment of positive and negative symptoms with an adenosinergic agent.

Lab Techniques and Equipment

Prism 7900HT Fast Sequence Detection System and ancillary equipments; Microarray platforms; Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS); Molecular gene expression of candidate genes and perturbed biochemical pathways in post-mortem tissue; Combined genetic-endophenotypic-PET imaging studies using receptor-specific ligands.
