Research Interests

Dr. Blumenthal is an Assistant Professor and recent recipient of a Veterans Administration Advanced Research Career Development Award. His research is designed to determine the effects of aging and obesity on cytokine production by adipose tissue and their relationship to systemic levels and constituents of the metabolic syndrome, as well as examine the effect(s) of weight loss and aerobic exercise training in an older subset of subjects. As a clinically trained geriatrician, his research goals are to translate his mechanistic investigations into clinically relevant interventions that can reduce cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk in older individuals. As an investigator in the Baltimore VA Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), he is developing techniques to measure macrophages in adipose tissue to examine mechanisms regulating cytokine production in adipose tissue biopsies; race and gender differences in metabolic risk factors; and the interactions of gene variants, aging and environment in the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism in obese older adults.

Clinical Speciality

In addition to his research, Dr. Blumenthal is active in the clinical and educational missions of the Division and the GRECC. He led the Baltimore pilot site and now serves as the medical center physician champion for the national VA MOVE! (Managing Overweight and Obesity in Veterans Everywhere) Program. Leading this Clinical Demonstration Project, he examines functional outcomes and cardiovascular, genetic and molecular mechanisms to translate them into clinical practice. Dr. Blumenthal teaches the Introduction to Clinical Medicine for first year medical students, is the faculty director for the Geriatrics Interest Group made up of students across the six health professional schools of the University of Maryland, and is medical attending in the geriatrics clinic and on the Medical Service at the VAMC where he precepts and teaches medical students, housestaff and fellows in internal medicine and geriatrics.
