Biosketch
Dr. Welsh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His main area of clinical work is in the area of substance use disorders. He works in various in- and out-patient settings (as well as via Tele-medicine), including methadone and buprenorphine maintenance. He has an interest in substance use in pregnancy and the medical complications of addiction. He is the medical director of the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) Substance Abuse Consultation Service, which is responsible for substance abuse assessment and intervention with patients throughout the UMMC. He also works with the Baltimore City Department of Health and the State Department of Health on expansion of treatment for opioid use disorders, needle-exchange, opioid overdose prevention, and other harm reduction initiatives. Along with the Institute of Human Virology, he also works in Kenya to increase treatment of heroin use disorder. He is involved with training of healthcare professionals in various addiction-related areas. He is also the Medical Director of the State Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling.
