Personal History

Laurel J. Kiser, Ph.D., M.B.A. is a psychologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She received a doctorate from Indiana University in 1981 and completed internships and post-doctoral training in child clinical psychology. In 1986, she obtained a Masters of Business Administration from University of Memphis.

Research Interests

Much of Dr. Kiser's career focus has been on the delivery and evaluation of mental health services for child and adolescents.  Through this work, Dr. Kiser has treated many children and adolescents living in poverty, playing in dangerous neighborhoods, victims of neglect, physical and sexual abuse, with moderate to severe psychiatric and behavior disorders.  She has investigated the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and physical/sexual abuse on children and adolescents as well as family processes related to stress and trauma.  Her current research focus is on the protective role of rituals and routines within families, schools, and neighborhoods, and the development of interventions to strengthen rituals and routines and reduce the effects of trauma.  Dr. Kiser was recently awarded an NIMH-mentored career development grant in support of this work.

Dr. Kiser has also been involved in the development and use of outcomes management systems to monitor the effects of mental health treatment on child and adolescent functioning.  She is currently implementing such a system for a managed Behavioral Healthcare Organization in Pennsylvania and is interested in studying the usefulness of outcomes information in the clinical decision-making process.

Her articles appear frequently in the professional literature and she is a regular presenter and invited lecturer at national conferences.
