Lisa M. Shulman, MD is a neurologist specializing in Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. In addition to neurology, her diverse background includes training in nursing, education and health policy. She is the Eugenia Brin Professor of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders and the Rosalyn Newman Distinguished Scholar in Parkinson Disease. Dr. Shulman serves as Treasurer of the American Academy of Neurology and Director of the University of Maryland Movement Disorders Center. She serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Neurology and the Board of Trustees of the American Brain Foundation.
Dr. Shulman's major research interest is the impact of chronic neurologic diseases such as Parkinson disease on daily function and quality of life. Related interests include outcomes measurement, exercise interventions, and cognitive/behavioral problems in Parkinson's disease and related movement disorders. She has served as investigator in numerous investigator-initiated and sponsored clinical trials including trials of exercise interventions in Parkinson disease, development of new outcome measures and investigation of the genetics of Parkinson disease. Dr. Shulman serves as Principal Investigator for the NIH PROMIS Initiative (Patient-reported Outcomes Information System) to develop a measure of Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Conditions.
Dr. Shulman is Editor-in-Chief of Neurology Now Books and co-author of the reference book Parkinson's Disease: A Complete Guide for Patients and Families. She is author or editor of 15 books, 30 chapters, 130 peer-reviewed publications and 150 abstracts.
Clinical Practice Special Interests:
Dr. Shulman's special interests include management of Parkinson disease and parkinsonism dystonia, tremor, chorea, tics, myoclonus, gait disorders, tardive dyskinesia, dementia, memory disorders and Botulinum toxin injections for movement disorders.
