Research InterestsOur current research has focused on understanding the relationship/interaction between NHERF-1, the sodium-hydrogen exchanger regulatory factor-1, and the sodium-phosphate cotransporter, Npt2a in the kidney. We began these investigations in whole animals and now utilize a primary culture model system of proximal tubule cells and NHERF genetic knockout animals. In the past three years, we have observed an involvement of NHERF-1 in two important physiologic processes: the response to phosphate deprivation (dietary phosphate) and the response to Parathyroid hormone, another regulator of the sodium-phosphate contransporter. Future investigations will entail defining the molecular determinants of the NHERF-1/Npt2a interaction, as well as, deciphering some of the cell signaling pathways involved in this interaction and subsequent regulation of the sodium-phosphate cotransporter.
Clinical SpecialityExtensive training in the management of kidney and pancreas transplant recipients in the acute setting, as well as, in the outpatient setting and additional clinical responsibilities include the management of patients with acute and chronic renal failure.
