Personal History:

Dr. Mackenzie directed the National Study Center for Trauma & EMS from 1996 to 2006. Educated at Aberdeen University and School of Medicine, Aberdeen, Scotland (1962–1968), he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Anesthetists (UK) in 1973 and of the American College of Critical Care Medicine in 1990. Also, in 2001, when he was elected to fellowship of the Washington Academy of Sciences, Colin was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award “for innovative research in understanding decision making in emergency situations.”

Author of two books, 30 book chapters, and more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, he has been continuously funded by federal grants from NIH, NSF, NASA, AHRQ, ONR, the United States Army, and American industry for the past 17 years.

Research Interests:

Dr. Mackenzie's research interests include: pre-hospital care; telecommunications; and human factors in emergency care and disaster management.

Other research interests include: oxygen-carrying solutions; traumatic central nervous system (brain & spine) injury; trauma patient resuscitation; and respiratory physiology (gas exchange, respiratory system mechanics, oxygen transport).
