Personal History
Anthony F. Lehman, MD, MSPH, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He received a B.S. (major-biology) summa cum laude at St. Lawrence University in 1970 and then obtained his MD at the University of Rochester in 1975. Following an internship at the University of Virginia, he completed his residency training in psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles. While at UCLA he became a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar and completed his MSPH at the UCLA School of Public Health in 1981. From 1981-1986 Dr. Lehman directed the Long-Term Care Program at the University of Rochester, an innovative treatment program for young adults with severe mental illnesses. He moved to the University of Maryland in 1986 and directed the Center for Mental Health Services Research there until 2002. He then became Acting and then Interim Chair of the Department of Psychiatry from 1998-2000, before being appointed Chair in October 2000. Recently he chaired the American Psychiatric Association’s Workgroup that updated the APA Guidelines on Treatment of Schizophrenia. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Psychiatric Association Senior Award for Research Development in Psychiatric Services Research, the Distinguished Service Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, the Robert Cancro Best Chair Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the APA Alexander Gralnick Award for Research in Schizophrenia, and the Armin Loeb Award for Research from the International Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services.
Research Interests
Dr. Lehman is a nationally renowned mental health services researcher. Much of his research has examined outcomes of persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses, in particular assessing quality of life. He has also studied the impacts of substance use disorders among person with mental illnesses on diagnosis and outcomes, the effectiveness of assertive community treatment programs for homeless persons with severe mental disorders, and the effectiveness of interventions for families. His most recent research examined the quality of care provided to persons with schizophrenia. He has written over 150 scientific articles and is co-author of two books, Working with Families of the Mentally Ill and Double Jeopardy: Chronic Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders. He was Principal Investigator for the Schizophrenia Patient Outcomes Research Team, funded by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research and the National Institute of Mental Health. He was also Principal Investigator on the Maryland Employment Demonstration Project for Persons with Psychiatric Disabilities, funded by the Center for Mental Health Services, and Co-Principal Investigator on the NIMH-funded Center for Research on Services for Severe Mental Illnesses and the Maryland Medicaid Patterns of Care and Outcomes Study, also funded by NIMH.
