My current research focuses on: 1) Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) and its role in human diseases, especially Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and diffuse body cavity lymphoma (BCL). KS and BCL are common in HIV-1 infected people, especially gay men. KS is also seen in an endemic form in Africa, sporadically among elderly men of Mediterranean extraction, and among transplant patients. HHV-8 is highly prevalent in all four settings, but its role in pathogenesis and its prevalence in the normal population are not clear. A major objective of my laboratory is to characterize the activities of viral regulatory genes and determine whether they play a role in the pathogenesis of KS. 2) Chemokines and HIV-1. Chemokines are small cytokine-like proteins. Some of their receptors serve as coreceptors for HIV-1 infection, and HIV-1 is inhibited by naturally expressed chemokines. We are studying how expression of chemokine genes is regulated to understand how host defenses can deal with HIV-1 more effectively.
