Research Interests

Dr. Heuser's research examines frailty in older adults, recovery from acute illness of older adults and older adult responses to vaccines. Most recently, he was the Principal Investigator of a vaccine study comparing the location of inoculation, subcutaneous fat versus muscle, in older adults. This study is part of a program project grant to Robert Edelman, examining mechanisms of immunosenescence in older adults. In addition to location of inoculation, Dr. Heuser is examining the role obesity, as well as other characteristics of older adults associated with poor immune responses, may have on antibody responses to Recombivax™, a licensed Hepatitis B recombinant vaccine. Dr. Heuser collaborates with epidemiologists, vaccinologists, basic scientists of humoral and cellular immunology in the conduct of this research. Presently he is Acting Director of Geriatrics, Long Term Care Clinical Center for the VA Maryland Health Care System.
