Biosketch

Dr. Cires-Drouet is originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador and is a graduate of the University of Guayaquil School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine training at Jackson Memorial Hospital at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida, and his Vascular Medicine Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Cires-Drouet is fluent in English and Spanish and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Vascular Medicine.

He is the medical director of the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team at the University of Maryland.  He is responsible for coordinate the medical care of the patients with pulmonary embolism admitted to the University of Maryland Midtown campus and follow them up in the post-pulmonary embolism clinic. The University of Maryland receives more than 300 PERT activations a year from 40 different hospital across the Mid-Atlantic region.

Dr. Cires-Drouet is the medical director of the Wound Healing Center at the University of Maryland Midtown campus.  The wound healing center serve about 6500 encounters per year for patients with multiple acute and chronic wounds.  The Wound Healing Center includes a multi-disciplinary team of general surgeons, internal medicine, vascular medicine, emergency medicine and nurse practitioners highly specialized in wound care and hyperbaric medicine.

Research Interests

As a Vascular Medicine specialist, Dr. Cires-Drouet interests are focused on coagulation and thrombosis, hypercoagulable states, thrombembolic disease, IVC filters, peripheral vascular disease, arterial aneurysms, chronic venous insufficiency, sclerotherapy, lymphedema, vasculitis, vasospastic disorders, and vascular laboratory.

Dr. Cires-Drouet is a physician-scientist, who is NIH and industry funded. He has a great interest in venous thromboembolic disease and venous insufficiency. He is the site Principal Investigator for an international multicenter study “A randomized trial of ultrasound-facilitated, catheter-directed, thrombolysis versus anticoagulation for acute intermediate-high risk pulmonary embolism: The higher-risk pulmonary embolism thrombolysis study. HI-PEITHO trial”; to evaluate the benefit of catheter-directed thrombolysis in patients with intermediate high risk pulmonary embolism.

Dr. Cires-Drouet is also interested in thrombus resolution, he is the principal investigator of an Investigator Initiated Study that is looking for the role of Macitentan (a pulmonary vasodilator) to enhance thrombus resolution in the lungs after a pulmonary embolism, MAC-PRO trial. Dr. Cires-Drouet is interested in venous insufficiency, and he obtained a R21 award from the NIH to study “The Role of compression stockings in heart failure patients”, ROCK-HF trial.
