Victor S Babich
Dr. Babich joined the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2012 as an Instructor. He is a biophysicist with a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology obtained from the Institute of Cytology of Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, Russia), while working on a collaborative project with the Institute of Biochemistry, Free University of Berlin (Berlin, Germany). He took advantage of his background in biophysics and molecular biology to master multiple techniques in transport physiology, electrophysiology, cell imaging, biochemistry, and molecular biology during two consecutive postdoctoral fellowships at the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, US and the National Institute for Medical Research London, UK (sponsored by a Career Development Fellowship). The combination of these techniques allowed him to break through technical boundaries and to explore new areas in the mechanistic investigation of ion transport regulation and protein trafficking at and from the cell membrane (exo- and endocytosis).
Dr. Babich’s research interest is focused on the study of biophysical properties and molecular aspects of regulation of ion transport. In particular, he is studying the mechanisms of transport of sodium ion across cell membrane in the renal proximal tubules at the molecular level. Regulation of sodium absorption in this nephron segment, where more than 60% of total sodium is reabsorbed, is fundamental for the maintenance of body sodium and fluid homeostasis. Dr. Babich studies the transport activity of electroneutral sodium ion transporters (e.g. Na+/H+ exchangers) in real-time using a combination of electrophysiology (patch-clamp) and self-referencing ion selective electrodes. To investigate sodium transport at molecular level, he also utilizes state-of-the-art live cell fluorescence microscopy techniques (TIRFM, FRET, FRAP).
