Personal History:

Dr. Barrett received an AB degree from Brown University, and an MD degree from the University of Cincinnati. He has been a faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Medicine since 1980 when he finished his residency. He has served as Acting Chief of Psychiatry at the Baltimore VA Medical Center, Clinical Director of the Walter P. Carter Center and Director of Adult Psychiatry at the University of Maryland. Dr. Barrett’s primary interests are acute and chronic treatment of the severely mentally ill. He also has an interest in co-occurring disorders (addictions and other psychiatric disorders), as well as administrative psychiatry.  Another area of interest is the long-term effects of psychological and physical trauma. He has been a staff psychiatrist at the Veterans Hospital for many years and has treated a large number of veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
