Personal History:

Dr. Rajabrata Sarkar is the Barbara Baur Dunlap Professor of Surgery in the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Head of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Chief of Vascular Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He specializes in blood vessel disorders, vein surgery, aneurism repair, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Dr. Sarkar received his Medical Degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed a residency in Surgery at UCLA Medical Center and a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at University of Michigan Hospitals. He has led the effort for the development and availability of fenestrated aortic stent graft for the treatment of complex abdominal aortic aneurysms at the University of Maryland, and complex patients with aortic dissection as well as extensive aneurysms continue to be referred to the Aortic Center, which is a collaborative effort with the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Sarkar’s investigative research projects include the use of nanoparticles to promote arteriogenesis to prevent stroke and amputation due to arterial occlusion. Dr. Sarkar has also received a University of Maryland Seed Grant to develop a new automated femoral artery emergency device, which is a new era of research in the division.
