Biosketch

After completing residency training in Ophthalmology at the Friedenwald Eye Institute of Maryland General Hospital in June of 1981, became the Program Director for the residency prgoram in July of 1981 and was appointed the Chief of Ophthalmology in July of 1988.  In 2008 the Friedenwald Institute Ophthalmology program at Maryland General Hospital (now DBA the Universtiy of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus) merged with the University of Maryland Ophthalmology residency program.  Dr Friedel is currently the Resdiency Program Director and the Department of Ophthalmology Vice Chair for Education.  

In addition to his interest in training physicians Dr Friedel has throught his career been active in hospital administrative and quality activities which including serving as a Board Director for the UMMC Midtown Campus.
