Dr. Benitez has twice been honored with the Department of Medicine’s Distinguished Teaching Award for his role in the education of the residents. He also remains active in teaching within the medical school in both large group and small-group formats.
Dr. Benitez specializes in general cardiovascular medicine with a particular interest in valvular heart disease, aortic disease, and echocardiography. His major academic focus is educating trainees in cardiovascular disease as the program director for the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship, the largest fellowship program within the Department of Medicine. His responsibilities include the oversight of both administration and education, along with selection of fellow candidates and mentorship of the fellows during their education and training.
