Personal History

Dr. Farag received his B.S in Biology from the College of William & Mary in Virginia. After working as a microbiologist at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland and the U.S. Naval Medical Unit-3 in Cairo, he realized that his interests extended to population level research. He then went to study for his doctoral degree at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, were he conducted research on the infectious causes of anemia during pregnancy with his advisor, James Tielsch. He received his Ph.D. in International Health / Global Disease Epidemiology and Control in 2006, and went on to do a Postdoctoral Fellowship with Dr. Tielsch before coming to the Center for Vaccine Development in late 2007.

Dr. Farag has lived in the UK, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Tanzania and speaks English, Arabic, French and Swahili.

Research Interests

Dr. Farag's research interests are in the epidemiology infectious diseases in developing countries, with a particular focus on Helicobacter pylori and diarrheal diseases. He is also interested in time series analysis for the discovery and elucidation of sodiodemographic, climatic and economic factors that can affect the incidence of infectious diseases.
