FOCUS Data Coordinating Center: Transfusion Therapy Trial for Functional Outcomes in Cardiovascular Patients Undergoing Surgical Hip Fracture Repair (FOCUS)
A randomized, clinical trial testing which of two blood transfusion regimes (10g/dl trigger or symptomatic trigger) is better for recovery (ability to walk without human assistance) in the management of anemia in elderly, cardiovascular patients who have just had surgical repair for hip fracture.
P30 AG028747 (Goldberg/Magaziner)
Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) (RC1 & RC5)
The mission of this OAIC is to conduct exercise and motor learning based rehabilitation research to optimize the recovery of older adults who have suffered a stroke, hip fracture or other chronic debilitating disease, and translate these findings into effective community-rehabilitation programs.
R01 AG18668 (Magaziner/Yu-Yahiro)
Determinants of Recovery from Hip Fracture (Bone Metabolism)
The purpose of this ancillary research project is to: 1) describe changes in bone metabolism during the year after hip fracture for those who receive a home-based exercise intervention and compare these changes with those observed in hip fracture patients not receiving intervention; 2) evaluate the association between markers of bone metabolism and BMD; 3) evaluate the relationship between changes in body composition post-fracture with and with exercise and levels of leptin, and; 4) to measure three genetic markers of osteoporosis.

FOCUS-Detection of Myocardial Infarction (subcontract)
The purpose of this subcontract is to support the tracking of materials (ECGs, blood specimens) and data management for assessment of blood troponin levels, ECG findings, and acute coronary syndrome diagnoses reported from the core labs supported by the award to the clinical Coordinating Center under the direction of Dr. J. Carson (PI of prime).
Role: PI of Subcontract/Investigator

Life-Threatening Pulmonary Complications of Organ Transplantation: An Investigation of the Pathogenesis of Bronchiolitis Obliterans and Its Novel Treatment with Aerosolized Liposomal Cyclosporin A (Bench to Bedside)
The purpose of this proposal is to study the pathogenesis and treatment of bronchiolitis obliterans with inhaled liposomal cyclosporine in two high-risk transplant populations.

FOCUS Hip Fracture Transfusion Trial: Delirium & Other Cognitive Outcomes
The specific aims of this ancillary study is 1) to determine whether a symptomatic transfusion strategy (8 g/dL) is associated with higher delirium severity post-randomization (during hospitalization) compared to a 10 g/dL transfusion strategy; 2) to examine whether a symptomatic transfusion strategy (8 g/dL) is associated with persistent delirium symptoms from hospitalization to 30 days post-randomization compared to a 10 g/dL transfusion strategy; and 3) to examine the association of in-hospital delirium symptom severity and persistent delirium symptoms on later functional outcomes, including the primary FOCUS outcome of inability to walk at 60 days.

Research Training in the Epidemiology of Aging
The objective of this program is to train pre- and post-doctoral students to conduct independent and original research in the epidemiology of aging, with an emphasis on the prevention of late-life disability and functional decline. The program emphasizes four broad substantive areas including: musculoskeletal epidemiology, neuroepidemiology, genetic epidemiology, and the epidemiologic study of long-term care for chronic diseases.

Injury Control and Trauma Response
This training program is designed to enable trainees to 1) master a core curriculum in epidemiology and biostatistics; 2) become knowledgeable about the basic biological and psychosocial aspects of trauma and injury prevention; 3) become an expert in at least one substantive area relevant to injury prevention and control; 4) learn to contribute to a research team under the supervision of a primary mentor with expertise in an aspect of injury prevention and controls; and 5) demonstrate the capacity to conduct independent, original research.
