The Division of Gerontology has a long history of studying hip fracture. Since 1984, four major projects have enrolled more than 2,000 participants to examine the costs and consequences of hip fracture, determinants of recovery from hip fracture, and bone and muscle changes following hip fracture. Based on the Division’s comprehensive research in hip fracture, the National Institute on Aging granted Dr. Magaziner a MERIT award for the latter project. Supplemental projects in the area of hip fracture study proxy reports of health and functioning, development of performance measures for use in clinical trials, growth hormone, and bone histomorphology. Program faculty are now developing and testing inverventions to maximize recovery following hip fracture.
