Description
The Division of Gerontology in the Department of
Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine (DEPM) is an academic resource that
conducts research, educates health-care professionals, and provides services
related to gerontological health and disease. Areas of research include hip
fracture and hip replacement, dementia, pressure ulcers, psychological aspects
of aging, physical functioning of the aged, care-giving and long-term care, and
methods of studying older persons. The Division houses two major research
programs: The Baltimore Hip Studies and The Maryland Long-Term Care
Project. The division also has a National Research Service Award (NRSA)
Training Grant in the Epidemiology of
Aging.

The Division works closely with the DEPM clinical epidemiology investigators on their research into the natural history and etiology of hip fracture in elderly women and related research. It serves as a resource for the DEPM, other clinical and basic science departments in the School of Medicine, State of Maryland Department on Aging, Veterans Administration, UMB Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research Program, the Maryland Gerontological Association, and others. In addition, the division director, Dr. Magaziner, also co-directs the newly established University of Maryland Center for Research on Aging and is co-director of the intercampus (UMB and UMBC) Doctoral Program in Gerontology.
