Last year’s course is available online at http://davidge2.umaryland.edu/gcrc.

The Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine and the General Clinical Research Center are pleased to announce their 2006 course, Introduction to Clinical Research at UMB. The course is especially designed for residents and fellows and will provide them with a basic understanding of clinical research concepts and methods and the administrative infrastructure and resources available on campus in support of clinical investigation.

The target audience is clinical fellows who are starting the research year(s) of their fellowship. However the course is also appropriate for new faculty who are starting a career in clinical investigation. The course is not intended to replace more formal coursework in clinical investigation (which would be taken by persons working on our new Master of Science in Clinical Research degree). However, it should provide a brief introduction to key topics, including hypothesis generation, biostatistics and bioinformatics, data sources, grants, ethics, the IRB (and IACUC), and campus resources. Individuals completing this course will not be experts in any of these areas, but hopefully, will know who to call for help.

The course will be available to all UMB residents, fellows, and faculty and will be taught during the week of July 31- August 4, 2006 with sessions from 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. each day.

Course Topics Include:

  • Conceiving the Research Question and Study Designs
  • Clinical Trials
  • Clinical Research in Developing Countries
  • Questionnaire Construction
  • Research Ethics
  • Institutional Review Board - Domestic and International Submissions
  • Animal Use and Care Committee
  • Introduction to Biostatistical Methods, Including Sample Size
  • Campus Resources and Environmental Services
  • Data Management and Analysis
  • Secondary Data
  • Grant Opportunities and Administrative Matters
  • General Clinical Research Center

The course is offered annually. If it is not possible for your fellows to attend this year, we would encourage you to plan for the course in July 2007.
