Research Interests

Dr. Baumgarten’s major research interest is in the area of aging. Before leaving Canada to move to the United States, most of her work was on the epidemiology of dementia, including government funded projects on the health of family caregivers of elderly persons with dementia; behavior disturbance and cognitive impairment in community-residing patients with dementia; the impact of day centers for the frail elderly; the use of physician services among patients with dementia and their caregivers; and the reliability of proxy reporting in case-control studies of Alzheimer’s disease. She was Co-Principal Investigator of a Program Grant (similar to the U.S. Program Project grant) focusing on the epidemiology of dementia in the elderly. Dr. Baumgarten played a key role in the design, implementation, and analysis of the Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CSHA), a multicenter study of the epidemiology of dementia in Canada. She was Principal Investigator for the Montreal center of the CSHA and was responsible for the caregiving component of the national study. Recently, Dr. Baumgarten’s research interests have expanded to include the etiology of pressure ulcers. In 1997, she received an R01 grant from the National Institute on Aging to conduct a study entitled, Pressure Ulcers in Elderly Emergency Department Patients. In 2001, she received an R01 grant from the National Institute on Arthritis Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases to study the impact of changes in the health care delivery system on pressure ulcer incidence among elderly hip fracture patients. Dr. Baumgarten is also conducting studies on risk factors for incontinence among elderly women undergoing hip surgery; iatrogenic risk factors for hospital-acquired pressure ulcers; racial differences in the incidence of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers; and the frequency and correlates of pressure ulcers among residents newly admitted to nursing homes.
