MEDT 471 Virology/Parasitology/Mycology
(Credits: 3)
This course presents an introduction to clinical virology, parasitology and mycology with the focus on the approach used in a clinical virology, parasitology and mycology laboratory to isolate and identify viruses, parasites and fungi of pathogenic significance. The course is divided into three sections. In the virology section, after a general review of the principles of virology, each class of viruses will be discussed as relating to structure, replication mechanisms, pathogenic mechanisms, and identification and treatment protocols. The laboratory portion will consist of training in sterile technique necessary to maintain, preserve, and inoculate a standard tissue culture line as well as examples of CPE (cytopathic effect), viral titration and plaque assay, rapid viral antigen testing and direct immunofluorescence testing for HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus).
The second part of the course gives an overview of parasitic and fungal infections with emphasis on the major pathogens recovered from clinical specimens. During the course each student works independently, building self-reliance and analytical skills to identify pathogens from clinical specimens and in the reporting of their findings.
