The University of Maryland Statewide Health Network (UMSHN), funded by the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund Program, is a community–based, statewide and regional infrastructure which supports a wide variety of cancer and tobacco-related disease prevention and control activities. UMSHN consists of one central and six regional offices and more than 25 telemedicine linkages
across Maryland.

UMSHN lays the groundwork for the reduction of morbidity and death resulting from cancer and other tobacco-related diseases by delivering a three-pronged approach which includes the distribution of prevention and control evidence-based best practices, faculty-community outreach and research, and promotion of clinical trials.

Through community partnerships, UMSHN supplies traditionally underserved rural and urban communities with health education programs and public awareness activities. UMSHN provides access to continuing education programs for health care professionals, fostering compliance with screening, early detection, and the latest treatment practices. UMSHN also funds community-based research on health disparities conducted by University of Maryland School of Medicine and University of Maryland, Baltimore faculty.

The University of Maryland Statewide Health Network also provides clinical trials awareness and education through public educational programs, continuing education for physicians and infrastructure support to ensure quality and participation in clinical trials.
