We Are Not Your Traditional Medical School
Leading the Way
Harry C. Knipp, MD
Alumnus, Class of 1976
As America’s oldest public medical school, we have forged the way in many new directions, producing generations of medical pioneers for more than 200 years. As one of the top medical schools in the country,* we continue to lead today. Our impact is felt around the globe.
We are the first medical school in the country to:
- institute a residency-training program,
- create a teaching hospital,
- establish a dedicated multidisciplinary program in trauma, and
- institute many other “firsts”.
As the founding institution of the University of Maryland’s 11-campus system, the School of Medicine, with its partner the University of Maryland Medical Center, trains more than half of all the practicing physicians in Maryland and our faculty physicians accommodate one million patient visits per year.
In the span of two centuries, the School of Medicine has developed some of the world’s foremost programs in trauma care, human virology, vaccine development, cancer, and aging research. We are leading the way in many new areas, including stem cell research, genomics, and integrative medicine.
We have established many traditions, but we are not your traditional medical school -- we’ve broken the mold! The University of Maryland School of Medicine is not only an exceptional educational institution, or a well-regarded center of research, or an advanced healthcare facility. We are all of this, and more.
* University of Maryland ranks 6th among public medical schools and 16th among all 138 total medical schools in the U.S., both public and private, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.
