2009 Fund for Medicine Gala

The 2009 Fund for Medicine Gala was held on Saturday March 14th from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at the Baltimore Convention Center Hilton. This year's theme was Discovery Advancing Better Global Health. The event's honorary co-chairs were Dr. Robert E. Fischell and Mrs. Susan R. Fischell (pictured left with Dr. Mandeep Mehra at the event).

This year's Gala raised $242,000. These proceeds will benefit the University of Maryland Fund for Medicine, which provides critical funding for basic science research and clinical initiatives at the School of Medicine. Funds will also be used by the Dean's Office to support programs and projects throughout the School of Medicine.

Dean E. Albert Reece served as the Master of Ceremonies during the dinner program, which featured a tribute to the School of Medicine's endowed chairs and professors. Last year, the school began a new tradition of honoring the recipients of these endowments with the John Beale Davidge medal, which recognizes their achievements and the generosity of the donors supporting them. All faculty members who received professorships or endowed chairmanships before this tradition began were presented with their Davidge medals at the Gala.

Endowment medals feature the School's founding father, John Beale Davidge on the front, while the back recognizes the donor or person for whom the professorship or chair position is named.

The most powerful tools the School of Medicine has to recruit and retain the best faculty are endowed chairs and professorships—academic medicine's most prestigious honors. Today, only three percent of faculty positions at the School of Medicine are endowed chairs or professorships.

The school's goal is to endow chairs for every basic science and clinical department and other key areas of excellence—a goal that would bring the school to a new level of excellence and enable it to touch the lives of many more patients.
