Attracting the Best Minds
At the core of all that happens at the School of Medicine—from everyday triumphs to worldwide achievements—are the more than 1,000 faculty members. These men and women provide knowledge and mentorship to physicians-in-training, lead research efforts that prompt new discoveries and offer the best in care to patients. As our faculty grows in size and stature, our ability to advance and improve medicine grows as well. Indeed, they are the linchpin of our continued success and our future growth.
Our faculty members have long been recognized around the country and throughout the world for their innovative work. They log millions of air miles each year to share their knowledge and discoveries. Physicians and scientists come here from all corners of the globe to learn from them. Our faculty members have led many of the most respected regional and national medical organizations, from the Maryland State Board of Physicians to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Ten of our faculty are members of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science, where, elected on the basis of professional achievement, they serve as advisers to the nation on issues of public health and medicine.
Within the walls of the School of Medicine, the impact of faculty members is tremendous. The best faculty members serve as magnets, attracting the brightest students, residents and fellows; they draw in the most promising junior faculty. The best faculty invite the most funding for research, which in turn draws more patients.

Because these physicians and scientists are so critical to our future, recruiting and retaining them is of utmost importance. The school already has much to offer prospective faculty members: a commitment to excellence, state-of-the-art facilities, an exciting and supportive research climate.
But perhaps the most powerful tools we have to recruit and retain the best faculty are endowed chairs and professorships—academic medicine’s most prestigious honors. They exert a strong pull on new faculty and serve as fitting rewards for outstanding current faculty.
Today, only three percent of faculty positions at the School of Medicine are endowed chairs or professorships. Our goal is to endow chairs for every basic science and clinical department and other key areas of excellence—a goal that would bring the school to a new level of excellence and enable us to touch the lives of many more patients.
Recruiting and retaining top faculty allows us to further strengthen the programs in which we’re already recognized: vaccines, schizophrenia, transplantation, trauma and the genetics of complex diseases. And new areas, such as genomics, informatics and bioengineering, need the leadership and strength of outstanding faculty members to help us move forward.
Whether they’ve been here for one year or 20 years, our faculty members touch on all aspects of our mission—improving patient care, education and research—while making a difference for the community and the world.
