The Case for Support

SOM ResearchEstablished in 1807, the University of Maryland School of Medicine is the fifth oldest medical school in the United States. Today, we educate and train more than half of Maryland’s practicing physicians—and our excellent faculty influences medicine throughout the world.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine is one of the country’s fastest growing research institutions. As of 2003, we ranked eighth in external funding among U.S. public medical schools. In research funding per clinical faculty member, we rank fourth among public medical schools and sixth among all 125 medical schools, public and private.

We are nationally and internationally recogized for programs such as kidney transplantation, the Center for Vaccine Development and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. We are leaders in the neurosciences, diabetes, cancer and infectious diseases, among other critical areas. And we’ve only begun to tap the potential of the human genome.

With total annual revenues exceeding $600 million, the School of Medicine is among the largest enterprises in the Baltimore area. Although we are a state institution, less than six percent of our revenue comes from state support, so we must operate much more like a private medical school.

What kind of impact have we made? Consider this: in the past two centuries, more than 21,000 students have graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and thousands more have trained or served as faculty members here. Collectively, these physicians have gone on to touch the lives of millions of people around the country and around the world—and especially in Maryland. Our faculty members have affected the lives of untold numbers of others through research results and discoveries that have changed medical standards worldwide.

To recognize two centuries of leadership in academic medicine, we have launched The Bicentennial Campaign for the University of Maryland School of Medicine. This historic campaign seeks to raise $200 million in private financial support from alumni, friends, patients, corporations, foundations, faculty and staff. Many generous donors have stepped up during the nucleus phase of the campaign, and we are asking all of our friends and supporters to join in this worthy endeavor. Our commitment is to sustain this academic jewel as a world-class school of medicine.
