Student Life

Electives

There are no electives required during the pre-clinical years. However, many of the faculty offer experiences either during the summer or at unscheduled times during the fall and spring semesters. Offerings have included such diverse topics as cardiovascular pathology, medical rehabilitation, human nutrition, alcohol and drug abuse, and many research projects. Students will need to contact the appropriate faculty members to make individual arrangements.

Students may take as many electives in their pre-clinical years, in any combination, as they wish. However, a maximum of only three months of senior year elective credit will be awarded as a result of pre-clinical electives. A minimum of one, 4-week clinical elective will be required of all students in their senior year regardless of the amount of elective credit accrued in their pre-clinical years.

Students participating in preclinical electives, including CAPP, Medical Spanish, Family Care Track and approved Law School courses must earn a minimum grade of "C" in all medical school coursework in order to register for or continue with the elective. Students not meeting this standard will be withdrawn from the course or program upon confirmation of a "D" or "F" in a course. No partial credit will be awarded to students required to withdraw.

A one-month senior elective in which students, known as Academic Teaching Scholars, will teach Year-2 subject matter to rising sophomores in the SSEP program. Eight senior students will be selected based on their academic performance, interest in medical education and other relevant attributes. The seniors will organize and select subject areas to be taught, provide a syllabus and PowerPoint presentations and write exams. Training will be provided in the last quarter of the junior year. They will receive one month of AHEC credit for teaching this course, will be evaluated at the end of their experience and given a grade. Since this teaching experience occurs in July, the grade and evaluation will appear in the student's MSPE. Students selected as teachers will be required to do their month of AHEC at a University of Maryland clinical site, and will not be permitted to participate in the Epidemiology option. This will allow them to benefit from a clinical AHEC experience. A maximum of one month AHEC credit will be awarded to students participating in the SSEP.

International Electives

Many students are interested in international electives. We do provide elective credit for those experiences subject to review and approval by the School of Medicine. The necessary paperwork is on the OSA website. Additional valuable information can be found on the AMSA website http://www.amsa.org/global/ih/

This site includes important information regarding safety and health issues. These issues, along with quality of the educational experience, are of particular concern to us at the School of Medicine and are the items we will look at when considering a request for an international elective. We suggest that you focus especially on the "toolkit" and "checklist" links on the AMSA website to get yourself organized and prepared. Please contact the OSA if you have questions.
