Our History

In 1991, NICHD funded a Brain and Tissue Bank for Developmental Disorders at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD. In 1992, a sister bank was established at the University of Miami. In 2004, the repository at the University of Miami ended and all tissue samples were transferred from the Miami site to Baltimore. The Miami Bank continued to collect tissue samples for the Baltimore repository site until 2009.

Samples collected at the repository at the University of Miami (before 2004) are designated as MnnnnM (n=integer); samples collected by the Baltimore site and Miami site (beginning 2004) are labeled UMBnnnn.

In 2009, the University of Maryland, Baltimore was awarded a $7.15 million contract to solely operate the facility for the NICHD for another five years.
