Peptide/Protein Characterization



The Biopolymer/Genomics Core Facility has a variety of instrumentation for the analysis and characterization of peptides, proteins and a wide range of other molecules. Included are preparative HPLC's, analytical HPLC's with UV/Vis, diode array, fluorescence and electrochemical detectors, three capillary electrophoresis units withUV/Vis, diode array, and laser-induced fluorescence detectors, and a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer.

HPLC applications include:

  • reversed phase (analytical and preparative)
  • ion-pairing (analytical)
  • sizeexclusion (analytical and preparative)
  • ionexchange (analytical and preparative)
  • affinity interaction (analytical)

Modes of capillary electrophoresis separations available include:

  • free solution
  • micellarelectrokinetic chromatography (MEKC)
  • size exclusion
  • chiral
  • isoelectric focusing

These tools have been used to follow chemical, enzymatic, or metabolic reactions, inter- and intra-molecular binding, and stability studies.

Patricia Campbell, PhD, an analytical biochemist with more than 25 years of experience in the practice and training of HPLC and capillary electrophoresis techniques is responsible for these services. As many of these services involve custom design and methods development, fees are quoted upon request.
