Description: Honors a distinguished scientist in clinical or diagnostic immunology for outstanding contributions to those fields. The nominee must demonstrate significant contributions to the understanding of the functioning of the host immune system in human disease, clinical approaches to diseases involving the immune system or development or clinical application of immunodiagnostic procedures.

American Academy of Microbiology
American Academy of Microbiology Fellowship
Deadline: November 1
Prize: Fellowship
Description: Over the last 50 years, 2,700 distinguished scientists have been elected to the Academy. Fellows are elected through a highly selective, annual, peer review process, based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. A Committee on Election to Fellowship, consisting of Fellows of the Academy who are elected by the membership, reviews all nominations for Fellowship and recommends to the Board of Governors what action should be taken. Each elected Fellow has built an exemplary career in basic and applied research, teaching, clinical and public health, industry or government service. Election to Fellowship indicates recognition of distinction in microbiology by one’s peers. Over 200 Academy Fellows have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, while many have also been honored with Nobel Prizes, Lasker Awards, and the National Medal of Science.

Helen M Free Award for Public Outreach

Description: The Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of public outreach by a member of the ACS who improves public recognition and appreciation for the contributions of chemistry. This award was established in 1995 by the American Chemical Society Committee on Public Relations and Communications. Winners receive a crystal award and a $1000 prize.

Description: The Alfred Stengel Memorial Award was established by the Board of Regents on April 27, 1947. The award honors Dr. Stengel, a Regent and President of the College for two terms. This award is bestowed for outstanding service to the American College of Physicians. Description: The American College of Physicians Award for Diversity and Access to Care was established by the Board of Regents on October 25, 2008. The award is given to an ACP member with outstanding accomplishments in advancing diversity in clinical medicine or research, and/or access to care in relation to diverse populations. Activities must pertain predominantly to work in the United States. “Diverse populations” are understood to include: 1) economically or socially disadvantaged patient populations, for example, minorities, immigrant groups, or the homeless; and 2) groups underrepresented in the healthcare workforce.

Nicholas E. Davies Memorial Scholar Award for Scholarly Activities in the Humanities and History of Medicine (“Davies Award”)

Description: The Nicholas E. Davies Memorial Scholar Award was established by the Board of Regents on March 23, 1992 to honor Dr. Davies, a Regent and President-elect of the College who was killed in a plane crash. The award is given for outstanding contributions to humanism in medicine and will be bestowed in recognition of scholarly activities in history, literature, philosophy, and ethics. The recipient shall possess some of the characteristics for which Dr. Davies was well known and respected: warmth, compassion, idealism, and energy. The recipient must have deep awareness of the importance of humane letters, particularly poetry and history, as one important avenue to the needs of the physician as he or she deals with human issues in health, illness, and death. The award is not limited to those directly involved in medicine. Different aspects of humanistic qualities and the human condition, especially as they relate to health and medical care, will be considered. The awardee is expected to give a lecture at the ACP Annual Meeting.

Joseph F. Boyle Award for Distinguished Public Service (“Boyle Award”)

Description: The American Society of Internal Medicine presented a Distinguished Public Service Award beginning in 1990. In 1992, the award was renamed to honor the late Joseph F. Boyle, MD, ASIM’s Executive Director from 1985 to 1992. Following the merger of the ACP and ASIM in 1998, on October 30th of that year the Board of Regents unanimously approved continuing the award and expanding it to include a physician acting in an official capacity. The award is bestowed upon a current or former government official or a physician acting in an official capacity (state or federal, executive or legislative) who has provided outstanding public service toward improving the delivery of health care. This individual should have distinguished himself or herself by accomplishments aligned with the ACP’s goals, objectives, and advocacy efforts. Preference is given to nominees who have directly contributed to achieving ACP’s public policy objectives, such as introducing or advocating legislative or regulatory changes that are based on ACP policy and/or working collaboratively with the College to achieve shared objectives.

Alvan R. Feinstein Memorial Award (“Feinstein Award”)

Description: The Alvan R. Feinstein Memorial Award was established by the Board of Regents on April 8, 2002 and is given every other year. The award honors the late Dr. Feinstein, who was internationally recognized as the father of clinical epidemiology, and is supported by an endowment from his estate. The award is to be given to an American physician who has made a major contribution to the science of patient care in activities that Dr. Feinstein has broadly defined as clinical epidemiology or clinimetrics, involving the direct study of patients’ clinical conditions.

The award is given to a member of the American College of Physicians or to an organization that has made important health care delivery innovations for diabetic patients resulting in improved clinical or economic outcomes; or a member of the ACP who has conducted research that significantly improves quality of care or clinical management of diabetes. Description: The Walter J. McDonald Award for Young Physicians was established by the Board of Regents on January 11, 2003. Dr. McDonald is a former Governor and Regent who served as Executive Vice President of the College from 1995 to 2002. The award recognizes outstanding achievement by a physician member who is within 16 years of graduating medical school and who is not an ACP Medical Student Member or Associate. Nominees must meet these qualifications as of June 30th of each year considered. Areas of achievement may include leadership; academics, including publishing, teaching, and mentoring; and/or volunteerism.

Joseph E. Johnson Leadership Award (“Johnson Award”)

Description: The Joseph E. Johnson Leadership Award was formerly administered by the Council of Associates and was established by the Board of Regents as a national award on January 11, 2003. Dr. Johnson served as ACP Governor, Regent, Treasurer, Interim Executive Vice President, and Senior Vice President for Membership. The award recognizes an Associate member of the College who has demonstrated qualities that exemplify the College’s mission “to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine.” Nominees may have outstanding achievements in any of a wide variety of areas, including leadership, medical practice, research, teaching, publications, advocacy, and/or volunteerism. For each year considered, nominees must be Associates as of June 30th of that year.

Key Contact of the Year Award (“Key Contact Award”)

Description: The Key Contact Award program recognizes those members who have made exceptional contributions to advance the College’s public policy agenda. Key Contacts communicate as constituents with their members of Congress on issues of importance to internists and their patients and to medical students. The College has nearly 6,000 Key Contacts who partner with ACP’s Washington office. The award recipient is chosen based on the quality and quantity of responses to ACP’s congressional legislative alerts, writing editorials and letters to the editor, meeting with his or her members of Congress, expanding chapter federal advocacy efforts, recruiting Key Contacts, and organizing Leadership Day visits and other meetings with legislators.
Restrictions/Limitations: Nominees must be a registered ACP Key Contact who has actively participated in federal advocacy during the past year.

American College of Physicians Mastership

Description: The first Mastership in the College was presented in 1923 to Dr. James M. Anders, who served the College as President for two terms. He was recognized for his extraordinary service to the College and for being one of the most outstanding internists and medical teachers of his day. ACP Bylaws state that Masters shall be Fellows who have been selected because of “personal character, positions of honor, contributions towards furthering the purposes of the ACP, eminence in practice or in medical research, or other attainments in science or in the art of medicine.” Masters must be highly accomplished individuals. Evidence of their achievements can come from many types of endeavors such as research, education, health care initiatives, volunteerism, and administrative positions. The Master must be distinguished by the excellence and significance of his or her contributions to the field of medicine. For Mastership, ACP involvement is expected, with rare exceptions. This may include, for example, service to the College in an official capacity, participation in chapter activities, and involvement in the development of College products and educational programs.
Restrictions/Limitations: Nominees must be an ACP Fellow. Individuals should not self-nominate or, if nominated, should not be involved in the process.

Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award for Volunteerism and Community Service (“Edwards Award”)

Description: The Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award was established by the Board of Regents on October 30, 1998. The award honors the late Dr. Edwards, a Governor and Regent of the College. The award is bestowed upon an ACP Medical Student Member, Associate, Member, Fellow, or Master who has initiated or has been involved in volunteer programs or has provided volunteer service post-training. The service must have been performed on a completely voluntary basis and not for the completion of training or position requirements. Volunteer work must have been done as a physician or medical trainee and be medically related.

Description: The Herbert S. Waxman Award was approved by the Board of Regents on October 24, 2003. The late Dr. Waxman was ACP Senior Vice President for Medical Knowledge and Education. The award recognizes an ACP member who is an internal medicine interest group leader, clinical clerkship director, program director, or faculty member (no higher than the level of an associate professor of medicine) who spends a significant amount of time teaching medical students.

Jane F. Desforges Distinguished Teacher Award (“Desforges Award”)

Description: This award was established by the Board of Regents on April 5, 1968, as the American College of Physicians Distinguished Teacher Award and was renamed for Dr. Desforges on January 27, 2007. Dr. Desforges, a Master of the College, is the first woman to receive the award. The award is bestowed upon a Fellow or Master of the College who has demonstrated the ennobling qualities of a great teacher as judged by the acclaim and accomplishments of former students who have been inspired and have achieved positions of leadership in the field of medical education, primarily as teachers. If the awardee has not previously been elected to Mastership, he or she will be awarded Mastership when elected.

Description: The Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Awards from The Rosenthal Family Foundation were established by the Board of Regents in November 5, 1976. The First Rosenthal Award (R1) is given “to that physician–scientist, clinician, or scientific group whose recent innovative work is making a notable contribution to improve clinical care in the field of internal medicine.” Oncology is not included, as The Rosenthal Family Foundation sponsors an award in that field. The award is for recent work and is not intended to reward either a body of work or an accomplishment of long standing. The Foundation is most interested in stimulating innovation and urges consideration of younger individuals whose work has not been sufficiently recognized.

Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award of the American College of Physicians (“Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award”)

Description: The Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award was established by the Board of Regents on January 11, 1997. The award is bestowed upon a Fellow of the College who has consistently volunteered his or her services to teach medical students and residents. This individual should have demonstrated outstanding teaching prowess, displayed exemplary characteristics of care and concern for individual patients at the bedside, and served as a role model and mentor. His or her qualities as a distinguished teacher should have been recognized previously, for example, by teaching awards or citations from the nominee’s institution, medical students or residents, or the local ACP chapter.

Description: The IOM is renowned for its research program, but it is also an honorific organization with more than 1,700 members and foreign associates who donate their time to put their knowledge and expertise to work for the nation’s health. Membership in the Institute of Medicine is based upon distinguished professional achievement in a field related to medicine and health; demonstrated and continued involvement with the issues of health care, prevention of disease, education, or research; skills and resources likely to contribute to the Institute's tasks of assessing current knowledge, conducting studies, and considering policy issues; and willingness to be an active participant in the Institute.
Each year, the full membership elects up to 65 new members and five foreign associates to the IOM. Members are elected for their excellence and professional achievement in a field relevant to the IOM's mission and for their willingness to participate actively in its work. These individuals represent not only the health care professions but also the natural, social, and behavioral sciences, as well as law, administration, engineering, and the humanities. For those at the top of their field, membership in the IOM reflects the height of professional achievement and commitment to service.

Description: King Faisal Foundation believes that it is through the collective efforts of outstanding individuals that the highest aspirations are realized. Description: Awarded since 1964, the Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics is awarded to an active researcher who is expected to continue his/her research activities for at least ten years, whose achievements in the field of biochemistry and biophysics -- including the biochemical and biophysical aspects of microbiology and the physiology of seed germination -- are outstanding, and whose achievements are a source of inspiration to many others. The Heineken Prizes are international prizes awarded biannually to five internationally renowned scientists and one highly talented Dutch visual artist for their great merits to science, Dutch art and society. The scientific Heineken Prizes recognize and reward unique achievement in the fields of biochemistry and biophysics, medicine, environmental sciences, history, and cognitive science. The sixth Heineken Prize, the Heineken Prize for Art, is awarded every two years to an artist living and working in the Netherlands.

Wolf Foundation
Wolf Prize in Medicine

Description: The Wolf Prize has been awarded annually since 1978 to living scientists and artists for "achievements in the interest of mankind and friendly relations among peoples ... irrespective of nationality, race, colour, religion, sex or political views". The prize is awarded in Israel by the Wolf Foundation, founded by Dr. Ricardo Wolf, a German-born inventor and former Cuban ambassador to Israel. It is awarded in six fields: Agriculture, Chemistry, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics, and an Arts prize that rotates annually between architecture, music, painting and sculpture. Each prize consists of a diploma and USD $100,000. The Wolf Prizes in physics and chemistry are often considered the most prestigious awards in those fields after the Nobel Prize. In medicine, the prize is probably the third most prestigious, after the Nobel Prize and the Lasker Award.
