ANES 548: Sub-Internship in Surgical Critical Care

Description and Goals
This is a four-week subinternship in the 4th year of medical school. The course is a joint offering from the departments of Anesthesiology and Surgery. The goal of this course is to provide the student with sound physiologic background and clinical experience for the effective evaluation and management of critically ill patients. The student will participate in daily work and teaching rounds and have responsibility for the care of assigned patients under the direction of the SICU physician team.
Students will admit patients to the unit, perform history, physical and laboratory assessments, and present patients on rounds and provide ongoing care. The student will perform any indicated procedures for his/her patient under unit physician supervision. The student will attend unit teaching conferences and relevant institutional conferences, e.g. weekly anesthesiology or surgery grand rounds. During the rotation the student will learn about the clinical evaluation and management of various critical care problems including shock, heart failure, myocardial ischemia/infarction, respiratory failure, ARDS, renal failure, hepatic failure, GI bleeding, sepsis, multi-organ failure, and ethical issues. Experience with complex surgical problems pertaining to liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, major vascular, complex GI, urologic, orthopedic, neurosurgery, trauma, gynecology and obstetrics is also available in the SICU. The student will become familiar with techniques such as fluid resuscitation, transfusion therapy, vasoactive drug therapy, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, airway management, ventilator support, renal replacement therapy, antibiotic usage and blood gas analysis.
Duration: 4 weeks
Hours of Participation: Full-time, Monday through Friday (morning and afternoon rounds). Weekends (morning rounds). Call 6-7 times per month.
