Externship Program for Medical Students

In addition to teaching anesthesiology courses to first- and second-year medical students, the Department of Anesthesiology also offers four and eight-week externships to University of Maryland first year medical students interested in learning more about the field. A stipend is provided.

The externship will offer an opportunity to get hands-on experience in anesthesiology in general, as well as many of the anesthesiology sub-specialties, including:

  • cardiac anesthesiology
  • critical care medicine
  • neuro-anesthesiology
  • obstetric anesthesiology
  • pain management
  • pediatric anesthesiology
  • trauma anesthesiology
  • transplant anesthesiology
  • regional anesthesiology

Students, working independently, will be accepted for the externship program. The weekly schedule and syllabus are available for each externship.

Requirements

Qualified applicants will have successfully completed, prior to the externship's start date, their freshman year in a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and continue to be in good academic standing through the externship's duration. Must have proof of PPD immunization. Housing will be the responsibility of the applicant.

How to Apply

Four documents are required, two of which are available here, as well as two letters of reference. To apply, click the links below and print the forms that open. After completing the printed forms, mail them to the Externship Program Coordinator (see address below).

The deadline for applying to the Externship Program is March 30, 2009
