Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology

Faculty of the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology combine expertise with compassion to care for UMMC’s youngest patients – and ease the minds of their parents – from the time of the preoperative evaluation, throughout the operation, and during the recovery period. Fellowship-trained pediatric anesthesiologists care for children in the Pediatric Surgery Center, a separate child and family-centered area. Faculty members provide evidence-based, high-quality care for infants, children, and adolescents. The Division recently expanded its services in the area of pediatric cardiovascular services. Anesthesiologists participated in the first surgery at UMMC to repair a neonate with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, in which the left side of the heart has not developed properly. Repairing this condition is a highly complex surgery. UMMC is one of only two hospitals in Maryland to offer anesthesiology services for pediatric cardiac procedures and anesthesia for children receiving radiation therapy. Faculty also provide care for young patients undergoing neurosurgery, orthopedic operations, cardiac catheterization, and other procedures.

  • Research: Pediatric anesthesiologists are collaborating with otolaryngologists on a study of perioperative complications in pediatric patients with sleep apnea. Data collection is anticipated to be complete in 2013.
  • Education: All residents in Anesthesiology rotate through the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology. Instruction is provided through weekly lectures, simulation-based pediatric scenarios, a didactic program for those in Clinical Anesthesia years 1 and 2, and Board review for those in the third Clinical Anesthesia year.
