General Anesthesiology at University of Maryland
The Main Operating Rooms at the University of Maryland Medical System are located in the recently opened Weinberg building. This state-of-the-art facility contains 19 surgical and two minor surgical suites. In FY 2007 there were 13,317 surgical procedures and 751 non-surgical procedures performed, of which 62% were inpatient and 38% outpatient. All surgical subspecialties are well-represented in this tertiary care facility. All surgical suites are supported with state-of-the-art equipment and supplies to support the clinical care of our medically complex patient population.
The department also provides anesthetic support to multiple “off- floor” locations, including Neuroradiology, GI endoscopy, the Electrophysiology Lab and MRI, on a daily basis. In addition, four additional OR’s are scheduled in open in July 2008, and an eight-OR ambulatory surgical care unit will debut in 2010 to support the growing surgical case volume.
The main operating rooms are supported by 43 faculty dedicated to the clinical care of their patients and the education of both residents and medical students. The Department of Anesthesiology plays a key leadership role in the comprehensive management of Perioperative Services and has an excellent relationship with all of the Surgical Departments, Perioperative Nursing, UMMS hospital administration and the Medical School.
