Giving to the Department of Psychiatry

The University of Maryland School of Medicine has embarked upon an ambitious plan to become one of the nation’s top five public medical schools over the next seven years, and the Department of Psychiatry is playing a central role in advancing this strategic mission. The Department is dedicated to providing excellence in biomedical education, basic and clinical research, quality patient care and service to improve the health of the citizens of Maryland and beyond.

In conjunction with The University of Maryland Medical System, the Department operates a large clinical service program, including divisions of general adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and community psychiatry.

Our Community Psychiatry Program serves over 2000 adults and children annually in Baltimore; our Center for Infant Studies provides cutting-edge treatment to over 300 at-risk women and their infants and toddlers annually; our School-Based Mental Health Program provides on-site mental health care to over 2200 students in Baltimore City schools; and our Maryland Psychiatric Research Center provides state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient treatment for several hundred persons with schizophrenia each year.

The Department also has long been a center of excellence in the education of psychiatrists. Our training program is nationally recognized for its enduring partnership with the State of Maryland, developing and sustaining a workforce of psychiatrists who serve throughout the State. For the past decade we have partnered with the Sheppard Pratt Health System, creating one of the premier psychiatric training programs in the country. We have well-established and highly productive programs of research which are focused on severe mental illnesses (in particular, schizophrenia). Our major research programs include the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center (MPRC); the VA Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center; and the Division of Services Research. In addition, we have recently initiated new research programs in child and adolescent disorders, mood disorders and geriatric disorders. These programs are studying the causes of mental illnesses, seeking new treatments and intervening to ensure that the best scientifically proven treatments become available to the citizens of Maryland.

These are just a few of the initiatives and programs taking place within the Department of Psychiatry. Please see below for a short video clip from the 2006 School of Medicine Gala that highlights some of our programs, a summary of recent gifts and an invitation to support the work we do. For more information on giving, please contact Marcy Miller at 410-706-6866.
