Rural Information Center Health Service (RICHS) Projects
In 1999, the National Agricultural Library (NAL) contracted with the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) for staffing and administrative support for Rural Information Center Health Service (RICHS). UMSOM's long-time commitment to rural health issues, especially through the Maryland AHEC Program, made this contract ideal. RICHS is the premier rural health information resource in the United States. RICHS was created in 1990 by Congress and was designated as part of the Department of Health and Human Service's (DHHS) federal Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP). RICHS was initiated in the spring of 1990 as a joint project of ORHP and NAL, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
RICHS provides rural resources through its web site and at 1-800-633-7701 which is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Since its advent, RICHS web site has grown steadily in its use paralleling RICHS' daily toll-free number use.
