Maryland Statewide Health Network (MSHN) Projects

The Maryland Statewide Health Network (MSHN) is established to reduce morbidity and mortality related to cancer and tobacco-related diseases through promotion of a wide variety of prevention and control activities as well as promotion of increased participation in clinical trials. MSHN envisions that every community and every citizen will have access to high quality, culturally sensitive prevention, screening, early detection and prompt treatment for cancer and other tobacco-related diseases. The MSHN emphasizes locally identified needs and collaboration between communities and the University of Maryland.

The Major Goals of MSHN are:

  1. To expand the University of Maryland's efforts to promote screening, early detection, follow-up and prompt treatment for cancer and tobacco-related diseases; and

  2. To help reduce morbidity and mortality from cancer and tobacco-related diseases and to reduce the disparity in cancer deaths between racial/ethnic minorities and whites.

In its initial phase, MSHN established a central office in Baltimore and four regional offices, Baltimore City, Lower Eastern Shore, Mid/Upper Eastern Shore and two offices in Western Maryland. These regional offices serve over 13 counties throughout the State of Maryland. Additional regional offices will be established in subsequent phases.

MSHN is supported by the Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund Program.
