Personal digital assistants (PDAs) are a convenient, portable way to organize information. Because of their small size they are easily misplaced, lost or stolen.
A lost or stolen PDA can put protected healthcare information (PHI) in to the wrong hands.

PHI is the property of this institution. HIPAA Security training informed you of your responsibility to secure your PDA. You may store PHI on a PDA or other portable device if it helps you do your work so long as:
  • There is acknowledgment of use of a PDA for storing of PHI.
  • Loss or theft of a device containing PHI is reported immediately to your department's HIPAA Security Liaison.
  • You take measures to safeguard any PHI it may contain even if it is your personal device.

These measures include:
  1. Enabling password protection.
  2. Configuring automatic timed-out locking.
  3. Content encryption (if available).
  4. Network access encryption.
