Holly Porter
(PROMISE Peer Mentor, Molecular and Cell Biology, UMB) has been awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships (F31) to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research.
Dr. Jocelyn Reader
(PROMISE alumna, PostDoctoral Fellow, University of Maryland Greenbaum Cancer Center) was awarded a 3-year Susan G. Komen for the Cure Postdoctoral Fellowship to study Prostaglandin E EP1 Receptor in Breast Cancer Metastasis and Disparities under the direction of Dr. Amy Fulton.
Maria-Theresa Okafor, Ph.D.
(PROMISE Peer Mentor, Gerontology, UMB) successfully defended her dissertation on June 29, 2010! She is the first African-American student to defend a dissertation in the Gerontology doctoral program on both the UMB and UMBC campuses. She will be the first African-American graduate of the UMB Gerontology doctoral program and she will be the first African-American female graduate of both the UMB and UMBC doctoral programs.
PROMISE is Maryland's Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. The core mission of PROMISE is to increase the number and diversity of PhDs who graduate from Maryland universities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. PROMISE services and programs are open to all graduate students who are seeking or interested in obtaining the PhD, regardless of discipline.
PROMISE at UMB
PROMISE at UMB is dedicated to providing a supportive community and professional development training in all stages of the PhD process. Along these lines we offer these programs and activities:
- Peer Mentors program
- Recruitment activities
- Professional Development workshops
- Seminar series
- Dissertation support group
AGEP Institution Accomplishments (nationwide):
- Over 45% of total minority PhDs awarded in NSF supported fields in 2005
- 10.3% increase in URM PhDs while majority PhDs awarded declined by 6.2%
- From 1998-2005 - 2,300 Underrepresented Minority Doctoral Grads in STEM fields
- Over 11,000 URM students currently enrolled in STEM graduate programs
- New enrollments of URM students in STEM increased by 25.4% (compared to 16.7% for majority students)

Use this website to search for programs in STEM, including undergraduate summer research opportunities as well as graduate fellowships and post-doctoral positions.
