UMB HRPP and IRB Policies and Procedures
The University of Maryland, Baltimore Human Research Protections Program and Institutional Review Board Policies and Procedures Manual contains detailed instructions concerning principles, policies, regulations, and obligations relating to human subjects research at UMB.
All Principal Investigators (PIs) considering and/or conducting research involving human subjects are responsible for knowing and applying the policies and procedures governing human subjects research.IMPORTANT UPDATE - MARCH 2008
The UMB HRPP and IRB Policies and Procedure Manual has been re-organized into a new format. NO POLICIES HAVE CHANGED.
This new version includes:
- updates that reflect current practice
- streamlined to eliminate duplication
- reduced references to BRAAN
- structured according to the five Domains of AAHRPP referring to different areas of responsibility in the UMB Human Research Protections Program:
- Organization-The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB)
- The Institutional Review Board (IRB)
- Investigator
- Sponsored Research
- Participant Outreach
The on-line version of the Policies and Procedures manual, rather than printed hard copies, should be consulted in order to ensure compliance with the most current Policies and Procedures.

History of the HRPP Policies and Procedures: The HRPP Policies and Procedures Manual was first published on-line June 30, 2005. Following UMB's AAHRPP site visit in September 2005, major revisions were made to the Policies and Procedures manual in November 2005. Since that time, there have been ongoing changes to specific sections as needed. To view a summary of the changes, click the link below:
