News & Updates
BRAAN will be INACTIVATED on November 30, 2009
As of 11:59 pm on Monday, November 30, 2009, BRAAN will be INACTIVATED and will be available as “Read Only.”
This means that YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO SUBMIT ANY TRANSACTIONS in BRAAN after that date. This includes new studies, continuing renewals, modifications, reportable events, and closure reports.
Therefore, ALL PROTOCOLS still active in BRAAN must be CONVERTED to CICERO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE REGARDLESS OF THE EXPIRATION DATE assigned to your current study.
For example, if your study expires February 2010, you must still convert it to CICERO before November 30, 2009 as you will have no means for submitting further transactions in BRAAN.
If you have a study in BRAAN, that has been determined to be “Exempt,” it does not have to be converted into CICERO unless you anticipate any modifications to the study after November 30, 2009.
If you need additional assistance with the conversion process, please view the instructional videos on the HRPO website:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
We have created a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) regarding the CICERO system. You can find these FAQs by clicking the Help/FAQ button in the upper left hand corner when you are logged into CICERO.
We encourage you to use the FAQ option in CICERO to submit your CICERO questions/issues. Someone will respond to these issues promptly.
Reminder - Risk Level Designations
The CICERO application has 2 risk level designations:
Minimal Risk & Greater Than Minimal Risk
If your BRAAN application was previously designated Low, Moderate or High risk then please select “Greater Than Minimal Risk” as the risk designation in your CICERO application.
Non Human Subject Research
The Human Research Submission application in CICERO contains a pathway designated “Unsure if this proposal requires IRB review” for evaluating potential Non Human Subject Research proposals.
If you are uncertain if your project would require IRB review, please select this submission type and answer the corresponding questions. CICERO will indicate if you need to submit your application to the IRB based upon your answers to the regulatory questions.
If IRB review is not required your information will be confirmed by a member of the HRPO and a letter generated confirming this determination for your records.
Administrative Modifications in CICERO
If Administrative Modifications for a CICERO application are returned to by the HRPO staff or Department Reviewer you have 90 days to address and return the application.
If you do not return the Administrative Modifications within 90 days CICERO will automatically withdraw the respective submission and a new submission will be required.
Amendments in BRAAN
No Amendments can be submitted in BRAAN if a CICERO conversion has been started!
If you need to amend your protocol you need to wait until your CICERO conversion protocol has been fully approved. Then you can submit a modification in CICERO.
