Service Learning - For Students

Hours/Schedule

First year students will spend a minimum of 15 hours at their project site (excluding travel time). All sites will expect students to attend their programs according to the schedule (at a minimum.) See posting Students may attend over and beyond the minimum scheduled weeks based on the needs and agreement with their chosen site.
Students should be prepared to begin their placements the week of September 12th
Placements will continue till the end of May 2017.

Project Selection Process

Students will choose from a listing of Community Partnerships (see posting). Students should sign up for 4 projects of interest ranking them 1 through 4. This will be the same process that students will experience as they schedule their clinical years’ schedule and apply for the match. More detailed instructions will be provided closer to the sign – up period, which is tentatively scheduled for late August/beginning of September. Some projects will require an application.

Completion of Reflection/Activity Log

  1. Students will log all activities, dates, times of experiences in a Service Learning Log on their Portfolio Page on Medscope. These logs will also include reflective commentary* on each session and overall experience and will be reviewed quarterly. Specifics posted on webpage
  2. There will be a Reflective Essay assignment due in March. Specifics TBA

Evaluations

  1. Students will be evaluated by their community partner (as a group and as an individual participant). The evaluation criteria will be posted.
  2. Students will have the opportunity to complete an end of the year evaluation about their experiences. In addition, mid – year feedback sessions will be held with the Program Director and Course Director.

End of Year Presentation

Some projects will be required to make a year-end presentation to faculty, the class, and community partners. Specifics TBA
