Motor Vehicle Injury Research

mv.jpg

The National Study Center (NSC) conducts a wide range of trauma-related research, encompassing injury epidemiology, EMS system evaluation and health services outcomes. As the primary research arm of the Maryland Emergency Medical Services (EMS) System, the NSC strives to enhance patient care in both the pre-hospital and in-hospital settings, improve traffic and vehicular safety and develop training and educational programs for injury prevention.

Motor vehicle injury research includes crash reconstruction aimed at improving survival rates for drivers and passengers. To help reduce the number of repeat drug and alcohol-related injuries, the NSC has evaluated the effectiveness of intensive counseling of patients admitted to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Technology initiatives include telemedicine links between Shock Trauma physicians, community doctors and EMS providers to enable faster treatment for trauma victims and evaluate civilian/military medical response for mass-casualty events and other emergencies. The NSC has also conducted research to improve pedestrian safety throughout the state of Maryland.
