UM SOM: National Study Center for Trauma (NSC)
Occupational Injury
Supported by funds from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the National Study Center is studying work-related injuries in Maryland, with the goal of developing a model statewide surveillance system. The long-term objective of this research is the reduction of death and disability from serious occupational injury.
As part of the study, the NSC has created a statewide database of emergency department records, hospital discharge records, medical examiners records, death certificates, and police crash reports. Trauma nurse coordinators from all nine adult trauma centers have agreed to participate by identifying work-related injury patients treated in their institution.
In addition, in-depth interviews of patients with known occupational injuries are being conducted at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. This information will be linked with other data sources to provide an overall description of occupational injuries in Maryland.
Recent efforts in this project have included translation of the interview questionnaire into Spanish, to accommodate the increasing population of Spanish-speaking patients at the trauma center.
