UM SOM: National Study Center for Trauma (NSC)
Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES)
The Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES) was established in 1997 in an effort to improve highway safety through the use of linked motor vehicle crash data collected from police, emergency medical services (EMS), hospitals and other sources.
The Crash Outcomes Data Evaluation System (CODES) Data Network supports a multi-center study of injuries sustained in vehicular crashes. The NSC has used CODES data to study motorcycle injuries, injuries to older drivers, pedestrian injuries, frontal collisions and to analyze the cost of motor vehicle crashes. The CODES project has collected data pertaining to more than 700,000 crashes and 80,000 hospitalizations.
In addition, the CODES data network provides information to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO) in support of various safety-related initiatives throughout the state.
CODES is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
