Department of Microbiology and Immunology
Virology
Research in virology at the University of Maryland Baltimore campus is centered at the Institute of Human Virology (IVH), a component of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute.
IHV investigators, including Drs. DeVico, Gallo, Garzino-Demo, Kamin-Lewis, Lewis, Pauza, Popovic, Salvato and Reitz, study the molecular mechanisms of infection and pathogenesis caused by primate (HIV and SIV) and rodent retroviruses, human herpes type 8 viruses, paramyxoviruses and arenaviruses viruses. These individuals hold secondary appointments in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and participate in the education of medical and graduate students.
A detailed description of research at the IHV can be found in the letter to Prospective Students from Dr. Gallo and on the IHV web site. Research on mechanisms of oncogenesis by RNA tumor viruses is conducted by Dr. R. Feldman, Associate Professor of Microbiology & Immunology, who is also developing animal models of leukemogenesis by sequential targeting of oncogenes to hematopoietic stem cells in vivo. Dr. L. Aurelian, Professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, studies mechanisms of viral latency and pathogenesis of Herpes Simplex virus, and is developing HSV vaccines. Dr. C. Schmaljohn is based at Fort Detrick, MD, and is developing DNA vaccines and immunotherapeutics for a variety of viruses including hantavirus, filovirus, flavivirus, and hemorrhagic fever viruses.
