Roles & Guidelines for the Mentee

The ideal mentee is a successful scientist who makes the Mentor’s job as easy and rewarding as possible. The ideal mentee is eager and enthusiastic, ambitious but not excessively so, respects the Mentor and is openly appreciative of the Mentor and the mentoring process. Further recommendations for mentees follow:

  1. Be enthusiastic.
  2. Communicate respect for the Mentor.
  3. Be eager to learn.
  4. Clarify when advice is not clear or is not understood.
  5. Go through the proper channels when placing complaints or making requests.
  6. Keep an open mind to advice and be willing to discuss your position and decision making process.
  7. Be dedicated to the mentoring process.
  8. Keep deadlines.
  9. Work with the Department coordinator to make her or his job easier.

The School of Medicine has made a commitment to the Mentoring Program as an important tool in the development of young faculty researchers. Advice and feedback involving this program will be gratefully received.
